Plastic Surgery Chicago Oak Brook Naperville
Rhinoplasty

Nasal surgery (rhinoplasty) is performed to change the size and shape of the nose, change the tip or bridge, change the nostrils, or change the angle of the nose and lip. It can also be used to change the shape of the septum to improve breathing and also repair nasal bone fractures from a broken nose. Incisions can be made inside the nostrils or underneath the nose. The hump can be removed and the nose made thinner. A splint is worn after surgery to maintain the new shape and form for one week.

OPERATION
Performed typically in one and a half to two and a half hours depending on complexity, this procedure is performed in our surgical suite in Hinsdale. Local anesthesia in combination with IV sedation or general anesthesia can be discussed according to patient needs.

SCARRING
Incisions are made on the inside of the nose or underside and sometimes both areas depending on the patient?s unique needs. Any exterior incisions are kept to a minimum and placed in areas easily hidden. Scars will be red and pigmented for one to two months and gradually fade to minimal within four to six months. Scarring in this type of surgery is rarely troublesome but as with all scars, they are permanent but their height and width are not totally predictable.

RECOVERY
After surgery, a splint will be placed on the nose and possibly nasal packing in each nostril. The treated area will be temporarily swollen, bruised and possibly distorted in the first week. Mild discomfort may occur and pain medication will be prescribed as needed. You will be seen 1-3 days after surgery and then in one month, and finally 4 months after surgery.

HEALING TIME
Swelling and bruising will begin to subside after 1 week although some may remain for three to six months. Patients can resume light exercise within two to three weeks and vigorous exercise after four months.

TIME TO RETURN TO PUBLIC EYE
Patients typically can go back to work and resume social activities in as little as seven days of surgery.

ACTUAL RESULTS
The ultimate results for this surgery appear six-12 months after surgery and are permanent unless additional surgery is performed.

RISKS
Temporary swelling, bruising around eyes, nose and headaches. Some bleeding and stiffness may occur. Asymmetry of the nose or poor airflow might result in additional surgery. All risks associated with any plastic surgery will be thoroughly discussed during consultation.
