One way to understand which implant size to choose is to bring in a bra you desire to fit in during your consultation. You can place the breast implants in the bra to better determine your desired size.

Breast Surgery (Breast Augmentation)This procedure is performed using saline or silicone implants to improve the size and shape of the breast. The FDA has approved silicone implants for breast augmentation as of late November 2006. Currently, saline (sterile salt water) is the only FDA-approved implant filler for first-time breast augmentation patients. An incision can be made under the breast in the fold or around the areola. The implant can be placed above or below the chest muscle.

Operation

This procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and is performed in our surgical suite in Hinsdale. Patients will be under general anesthesia although other options can be discussed if desired during consultation.

Scarring

Scars are located in areas where they are inconspicuous and easily hidden. They will be red or pigmented for 1-2 months and gradually fade to pale by 4-6 months following surgery. Sometimes complete fading can take up to a year. Scars are rarely troublesome, although patients should be aware that all scars are permanent and height, width and final coloring are not predictable.

Recovery

A dressing will be placed around breasts immediately following surgery. For the first week, breasts will feel swollen, bruised and possibly feel distorted or high. After one week, swelling will subside and position of the implant will begin to improve. Sutures are removed at 7 days, but can be dissolvable and will not require removal. A moderate amount of discomfort will be controlled with pain medication. You will be seen 2-5 days after surgery, and then in one month and then 4 months, although you may return earlier depending on individual needs.

Healing Time

Light exercise can be started typically in two to three weeks. Expect a full three to four weeks before resuming a vigorous exercise routine. Physical contact with breasts three to four weeks.

Time to return to public eye

Patients can usually return to work and social activities within a few days.

Actual Results

Most patients have good results with this type of surgery and feel the full benefit of breast implants immediately although reduction of swelling will take 2-4 months.

Risks

Most patients do not have trouble with their implants; longevity and durability of breast implants are variable and unknown. There are rare cases where some require removal of implants if scar tissue, infection or bleeding occurs. An increase or decrease in sensitivity of nipples or breast skin is unlikely but possible. All risks will be discussed carefully at the time of consultation.
