Otoplasty changes the position of prominent ears into a more natural and pleasing position and set back closer to the head through an incision behind the ears. This procedure gently folds and secures the ear cartilage into a more natural shape.
OPERATION Performed typically in two to three hours, as an outpatient surgery in our operating facility in Hinsdale. Local anesthetic with sedation by our certified anesthetist is used.
SCARRING Scars are hidden in the crease behind the ear. Scars will be raised for two to three months and gradually soften until they are not noticeable approximately 4 to 6 months after surgery.
RECOVERY A dressing is placed for the first week. Afterwards, a nighttime headband is used for sleeping for the next month
HEALING TIME A head bandage is worn for 5 to 7 days. Light exercise can be started at 2 to 3 weeks, more vigorous sports in one to two months.
TIME TO RETURN TO PUBLIC EYE Typically within a week of surgery
ACTUAL RESULTS Usually Permanent results in 2-4 months
RISKS Infection of cartilage, excessive scarring are low risks. A blood clot that may need to be drained should be identified. Recurrence of the protrusion, may require repeat surgery.
