Labiaplasty

OPERATION
The procedure for labiaplasty lasts approximately 1-2 hours and is performed in an ambulatory surgery center. Patients can be under general anesthesia, although IV sedation can be discussed if desired during consultation. The procedure decreases and reshapes the enlarged labia minora (inner lips) of the vagina. Many times this enlargement can lead to chronic chaffing, difficulty in keeping the area clean, and painful intercourse.

RECOVERY
Perineal care will be used to keep the area clean, much like after giving birth. For the first week, the labia will feel swollen. After one week, swelling will subside and reshaping will begin. Sutures dissolve usually in 7 to 10 days. A moderate amount of discomfort will be controlled with pain medication. You will be seen 2-5 days after surgery, and then in one month and then 4 months, although you may return earlier depending on individual needs.

HEALING TIME
Light exercise can be started typically in two to three weeks. Intercourse should be avoided for 3 to 4 weeks.

ACTUAL RESULTS
Most patients have good results with this type of surgery and should notice no change in sensation.

RISKS
Most patients do well after surgery and are pleased with their results. p All risks will be discussed carefully at the time of consultation.
