A facelift can improve sagging facial skin, perform a cheek lift and neck lift, and soften the jowls in combination with liposuction. The difference between a good facelift and a great facelift is looking "refreshed and rested" as if you've been on a very relaxing vacation, versus looking "done." Depending on your particular changes, modification and shortening of the incisions (mini-facelift) can lessen the time of recuperation.

OPERATION
Performed typically in three to four hours as an outpatient surgery in an ambulatory surgical center. A general anesthesia or intravenous sedation is used. An incision is typically located in the temple hair and the folds in front and behind the ear and usually held with sutures. Many times the eyelids, the forehead, and the neck is address at the same time. Also at times liposuction is used to better contour the neck and jowls.

SCARRING
The scars are hidden in the temple hair, the folds in front of the ear, and behind the ear. At times, a shorter incision limited to just in front of the ear can be used (minimal incision facelift) and will help decrease recovery time. Most patients experience red or pigmented for one to two months and gradually fade until unnoticeable by four to six months after surgery. Scars are rarely troublesome but patients should be aware that scarring is sometimes unpredictable and the height and width will remain.

RECOVERY
Expect treated areas to feel swollen, bruised and possibly distorted. Bandages or a compression garment will be worn to control swelling, provide support and aid in healing. Doctor visits will begin the first postoperative day, then a week following your surgery and then again at 6-8 weeks after your surgery. The sutures will be removed five to seven days after surgery and topical gels and continued used of iced wash clothes are recommended.

HEALING TIME
Four to six weeks. Light exercise can be started at two to three weeks. Healing will continue under the surface in the following weeks.

TIME TO RETURN TO PUBLIC EYE
10 to 14 days (with makeup). Sunscreen should be worn to protect healing skin.

ACTUAL RESULTS
Three to six months after surgery.

RISKS
Some patients experience injury to the nerves that control facial muscles or feeling. This is rare and usually temporary but may be permanent.
