Brow lift is a surgical procedure for enhancing the position of the eyebrows and improving the wrinkles of the forehead. The technique uses incisions in the hair-bearing scalp area to remove the forehead and frowning wrinkles as well as positioning the eyebrows at a more normal level. The desired result is to produce a pleasing, smooth contour to the forehead, and reposition the eyebrows. At times, this procedure is used in place of an upper eyelid tuck.

OPERATION
The procedure is performed typically in one to two to hours, depending on the technique, as an outpatient in an ambulatory surgery center. General anesthesia is used. Out of town patients need to plan on a three to five day hotel stay for continued treatment and postoperative care.

SCARRING
Scars are typically in the hair line. In most patients, scars will be red or pink for several months following surgery but fade by 6-12 months after surgery. All attempts are made to minimize scarring and are rarely troublesome although scars are permanent in height, width and final color.

RECOVERY
Bandages and dressing cover the treated area immediately following surgery. There is usually a moderate amount of pain, which is controlled by medication. There may also be drains which are removed in 1-3 days. Incisions are closed using sutures or staples. Staples seem to provide less scarring at times. They are typically removed 7 - 10 days after surgery. The treatment area will be numb, swollen and bruised for about 1 week and begin to subside.

HEALING TIME
Typically seven to 14 days. Light exercise can be started by the third or fourth week. More vigorous sports will require four to six weeks of healing.

TIME TO RETURN TO PUBLIC EYE
Most patients can return to work and social activities within 7 to 14 days.

ACTUAL RESULTS
The desired outcome, a smoother forehead and improved position of the brows will occur at about three to six weeks as the swelling subsides.

RISKS
Although unusual, risks may include blood clots, infection and bleeding.
