Abdominoplasty

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is performed when there is excess loose skin and fat in the abdominal area. Usually, this also includes realigning the abdominal muscles, which have been stretched out with pregnancy or weight gain (this may contribute to a protruding lower abdomen). This procedure helps narrow the waistline and after the excess skin has been removed. At times, a mini tummy tuck using a smaller incision can be used. Often this procedure is combined with liposuction and breast enhancement for a mommy makeover to repair all the changes that have occurred from childbearing. Dr. Izquierdo carefully assesses each patient's particular problem to

OPERATION
The procedure is performed typically in two to three hours, depending on size and technique, as an outpatient in an ambulatory surgery center. General anesthesia is used. Out of town patients need to plan on a three to five day hotel stay for continued treatment and postoperative care.

SCARRING
Tummy tuck scars are typically at the pubic line and extend along the bikini line. The scars may be shorter in a mini tummy tuck. In most patients, scars will be red or pink for six months following surgery but fade by 12 months after surgery. All attempts are made to minimize scarring and are rarely troublesome although scars are permanent in height, width and final color.

RECOVERY
Bandages and dressing cover the abdominoplasty area immediately following surgery. If you have had liposuction, these will drain for 24 hours and are also covered. There is usually a moderate amount of pain, which is controlled by medication. There will also be drains which are removed in 5-7 days. Incisions are closed using either skin tapes or sutures. If sutures are used, they are typically removed 7 ? 10 days after surgery and may not get wet. The treatment area will be numb, swollen and bruised for about 1 week and begin to subside.

HEALING TIME
Typically seven to 14 days. Light exercise can be started by the third or fourth week. More vigorous sports will require four to six weeks of healing.

TIME TO RETURN TO PUBLIC EYE
Most patients can return to work and social activities within 7 to 14 days.

ACTUAL RESULTS
The desired outcome, a smoother tummy and abdomen will occur at about three to six months.

RISKS
Although unusual, risks may include blood clots, infection and bleeding.
